From the moment we picked him up from the rescue Scruffy lived up to his name, he melted hearts and drew compliments everywhere we went. A willy boy it took the rescue three days to catch him running the streets. He adjusted to his new life as a pampered house dog pretty quickly but never let his role as protector of his new home and family slip. Too clever by half he could suss out a pill hidden in an offered treat or the coming threat of the dreaded bath. An endless source of unconditional love and dog smiles till the end, he will be remembered as one of the bestest boys we had the honor of spending twelve years with.

Light a Candle

The sweetest, bestest, most perfect boy,

I’m going to miss you more than words can adequately say. You brightened the lives of everyone you ever met, and you brought an insurmountable joy to my life every day that we shared. You were absolutely the best boy. I don’t know what I’m going to do with all my extra french fries without you pressing your little chin into my thigh until I look at you. I don’t know what we’re going to do without having to play the ‘get the farthest person from the back door’ game to let you out. I don’t know what I’m going to do without you looking out the front window as we drive away from the house, or come home without you barking or meeting us at the door.

I still wish you could have the life span of a tortoise and live for hundreds of years, but I know that you’re not in pain any more and you can run around and destroy your toy ducks and eat all the good-boy treats over the Rainbow Bridge.

Love you, Duffer. Until we’re together again, buddy. <3
